On January 16th, Shiv Kumar, a Dalit labor activist, was illegally arrested by Haryana police. Shiv's family and friends weren't informed of the detention until two weeks later on January 31. In police custody, Shiv has been tortured and held under inhumane conditions.
The circumstances of Shiv's arrest and detainment are alarming. Shiv's "friends mentioned how on both 28th December and 12th January, when Nodeep Kaur was arrested from their protest, Shiv Kumar didn’t even go to Kundli industrial area as he had been unwell since a long time."
We call on civil society in India and the international community to demand Shiv's immediate release. Further, charges against Shiv Kumar must be immediately dropped and those responsible for perpetrating violence against him must be swiftly held responsible.
